to market, to market
So looking forward to the Hamilton Maker’s Market this upcoming Saturday, December 3rd!! Randell Neudorf and I started talking a few months back about collaborating on putting in a table to showcase our art, make new friends and show me the ropes of the ‘art scene’. Come down and peruse handmade works by local artists and craftspeople. Stop by for a visit…we’d love to see you!

November Travels
I had such a great time getting away with friends last week! We ate great food, went for hikes in the sunshine, talked and watched some nostalgic movies. “anybody want a peanut?” It’s so great when you can reconnect with good friends!!

Traveling
It’s no secret that I love traveling… I like the whole experience. The dreaming, the planning, the journeying and exploring. Sometimes it’s great to find an exotic new place of wonder which leads to unanticipated adventure, but often revisiting an old haunt and rediscovering the magic of a place can be just what is needed. Taking an intentional trip reminds us of life’s journey and the necessary risk involved in living out our dreams. I’m reminded of an old Garth Brooks song (a remnant of my years spent in Saskatchewan) that talks about daring to chance the rapids to reach the other side. I don’t know if they’ll be any actual rivers or slippery streams on this particular trip, but I’m so looking forward to this mini-break out of the ordinary.
You know a dream is like a river
Ever changin’ as it flows
And a dreamer’s just a vessel
That must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what’s behind you
And never knowing what’s in store
Makes each day a constant battle
Just to stay between the shores
And I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I’ll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away
‘Til what we put off ’til tomorrow
It has now become today
So don’t you sit upon the shoreline
And say you’re satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance that tide
And I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I’ll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
There’s bound to be rough waters
And I know I’ll tke soome falls
With the good Lord as my captain
I can make it through them all
And I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I’ll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry

Freedom and Life
Each year on Remembrance Day I think about John Peacock. Years ago, when I was just a child, he shared with me his story of being a prisoner of war during the Korean conflict. I was too young at the time to fully understand the politics, but was the sort of kid who was a bit old for my age, so I listened intently as he spoke. I knew he was telling me his story so that no one would forget just how much horror could be packed into the word ‘war’ and so I would value the small freedoms in life that I take for granted. He sat down in the rickety sunday school chair, looked my 8 year old self right in the eye and bluntly shared with me about his experience in the war. The terror of being captured…the gruesome details of his torture which told me just how awful we humans can be to each other. It shocked me to hear of him being kept for months in a tiny bamboo cage, the burnings, beatings, the isolation and being buried alive. He leaned in close as he told of finally coming home and trying to adjust to life again…of struggling to forgive and let go of it. And he asked that we always, always remember what he experienced and to appreciate freedom and life. So, today I remember John Peacock.

diffused
The fog that descended upon Hamilton last night was just beautiful! I had to get out and take a few snapshots of the eerie, mysterious light. Without the blanketing fog, I probably would never have noticed the light shining in the darkness. Diffused, but still present… a good reminder as grey November is upon us.
Remember, Remember the Fifth of November
Remember, Remember the Fifth of November
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
We see no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot!
Happy Guy Fawkes Night! A strange holiday commemorating Fawkes’ failed attempt to blow up the British Parliament (including the king) in 1605. Kids still beg a “penny for the guy” from strangers to buy fireworks and there are bonfires everywhere. Some people even attribute our modern use of the word “guy” to this Fawkesy tradition.
Suddenly I’m in the mood to watch V for Vendetta.
